Woke Up With a Swollen Face? Call an Emergency Dentist in Singapore Now
(Singapore, Apr 26) — A dental emergency doesn‘t wait for office hours. When severe toothache strikes or a tooth gets knocked out, the first question is always: Where should I go, and how much will it cost?
In Singapore, true dental emergencies — severe pain, swelling, trauma — at public healthcare institutions are prioritised and seen on the same day. But the key difference lies in follow-up care. Non-emergency basic dental services at polyclinics carry a median waiting time of approximately three months, while follow-up treatment at national specialist centres waits around one month. Private clinics offer same-day comprehensive care at higher upfront costs but have no such wait.
At a Glance: Comparing Your Options
| Polyclinic (Emergency Walk-in) | Private Clinic (with CHAS) | |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation cost (Singapore Citizen) | $40.50 | $21 to $31 (CHAS benchmark) |
| Simple tooth extraction (posterior) | $78.50 (after CHAS subsidy) | $93 to $164 before subsidy |
| Emergency cases wait time | Same day | Same day |
| Follow-up treatment wait | 3 months (polyclinic) / 1 month (specialist) | Usually within 1 week |
| CHAS eligibility | CHAS not applicable at polyclinics | All tiers accepted |

Public Emergency Dental Care Options
For true emergencies—such as severe pain (a score of 7 or above), uncontrolled bleeding, acute infections, or dental trauma—Singapore’s public healthcare institutions will see patients on the same day. Specifically, the National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore (NUCOHS) and National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS) provide dedicated urgent care clinics tailored for these critical cases.
Nevertheless, the system’s capacity remains significantly stretched. At present, Singapore has only 14 polyclinics offering dental services alongside the two national specialty centres. This limited infrastructure often leads to logistical bottlenecks; for instance, when a polyclinic dentist detects a complex condition requiring a root canal, they must refer the patient to NDCS or NUCOHS for specialized treatment.
Consequently, a significant gap exists in the continuum of care. Between the initial stabilization at the polyclinic and the actual specialist appointment, the wait can last up to one month—leaving patients in a state of prolonged transition despite the urgency of their underlying condition.
In the public system, you are also assigned whichever dentist is on duty — you cannot choose your provider, and you may see a different professional at each visit.
Affordable Private Emergency Care: UDS Dental

Private clinics are the fastest route to a full resolution, but they aren’t necessarily the most expensive option once subsidies are factored in.
UDS Dental, with clinics in Ang Mo Kio and Yishun, provides emergency dental services including emergency root canal Singapore, emergency tooth extraction, broken tooth repair Singapore and dental trauma treatment — with extended weekday hours until 9 PM. The clinic has treated over 20,000 patients and holds a strong patient reputation for transparency and professionalism.
What patients say:
“Not only did this dentist squeeze me in for an urgent toothache consult, she gave me a script for antibiotics and waived the gap fee of $36 — all on a long weekend.” – Verified patient review, 2026
Patients consistently praise the professionalism, skill, and friendliness of dentists, commending their ability to make patients feel at ease, explain procedures clearly, and provide gentle and reassuring treatments. The clinic’s transparency of pricing, clean environment, and comfortable atmosphere are frequently highlighted. Some patients even report overcoming their fear of visiting the dentist after receiving treatment at UDS.
CHAS & MediSave accepted
From October 2025, CHAS dental subsidies have been significantly enhanced:
| CHAS Card Type | Simple Extraction (Anterior) | Simple Extraction (Posterior) | Permanent Crown | Root Canal (Molar) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pioneer Generation | $38.50 | $78.50 | $625 | $594.50 |
| Merdeka Generation | $33.50 | $73.50 | $620 | $589.50 |
| CHAS Blue | $28.50 | $68.50 | $615 | $584.50 |
| CHAS Orange | $19.00 | $45.50 | $410 | $389.50 |
Subsidy amounts listed are the maximum subsidy payable per claim under CHAS. After applying these subsidies, the remaining out-of-pocket cost depends on the clinic‘s fee.
CHAS Orange cardholders — Singaporeans with a per capita household monthly income between $1,501 and $2,300 — are now eligible for $45.50 toward a posterior tooth extraction, up from zero previously. A Pioneer Generation senior can now claim up to $625 for a permanent crown and $594.50 for a molar root canal treatment.
Starting mid-2026, seniors aged 60 and above can use Flexi-MediSave to offset up to $400 per year for root canal treatments and permanent crowns at CHAS dental clinics.
UDS Dental accepts all CHAS tiers (Pioneer Generation, Merdeka Generation, CHAS Blue and CHAS Orange), MediSave for eligible procedures, Baby Bonus CDA, and also works with private insurance panels.
For a knocked-out permanent tooth, the first 60 minutes are critical for saving the tooth. Handle it only by the crown, never the root. Rinse gently if dirty, reinsert into the socket immediately, or store in milk — never tap water — and see an emergency dentist straight away.
Making the Right Choice
Choose public healthcare if: you are a Singapore Citizen seeking the lowest possible out-of-pocket cost for initial emergency stabilisation; your follow-up treatment can wait weeks or months; and you do not require continuity of care with the same dentist.
Choose a private CHAS-accredited clinic like UDS Dental if: you need immediate complete care for a knocked‑out tooth, severe pain, or trauma; a dental emergency happens on a weekend or late evening; you want to choose your dentist and maintain continuity from stabilisation through to final treatment; you have a CHAS card and want fast access to subsidised care; or you value transparent pricing with shorter waiting times.
A dental emergency rarely resolves on its own. Delaying treatment — even by a few hours for a knocked‑out tooth — can mean the difference between saving the tooth and losing it permanently. Choose the option that gives you the right balance of speed, affordability, and peace of mind.
